My name is Julie Blok, I am a Child Counsellor, wife, and mother. I completed my Masters in Psychology at the North West University (Potchefstroom), specialising in Play Therapy. My heart has always been working with children and trying to give them a voice and empower them in this crazy world we live in. After completing my Honours Psychology degree I worked in the United Kingdom, working for a Non Profit Organisation (NPO) on their Children at Risk Project where I was allocated 40 vulnerable children to counsel and support. From there I transferred to the same NPO back home in South Africa where I ran, developed, and oversaw the Children at Risk project, working closely with children, schools, social workers and communities.
My idea to start an advice line stemmed from having my own Play Therapy practice for 5 years, it has been very rewarding running individual child sessions and helping parents support and equip their children. However I have noticed, there is also a large need for a parent advice line as I was constantly getting a lot of phone calls from family and friends for small everyday concerns, or bigger worries that schools have spoken to them about.
There are a lot of parents who do not have the time, resources or energy to commit to therapy over a long period, and often just need an ear to offload and get ideas, support, and be better equipped with practical solutions to handle difficulties their children are facing to avoid negative pressures on their family life. My heart has always been to help the most vulnerable – the children – and in turn help support and equip adults raise them. To empower parents and carers to work through difficulties hand in hand with their child, building a stronger bond and relationship between them over time.
